During the course of the excavations in the backdirt of Vogelherd in 2008, the crew recovered a tusk of a boar preserving clear signs of anthropogenic modification.

The prehistorian Gustav Riek excavated the Vogelherd figurines in the Vogelherd Cave near Niederstotzingen in 1931. Riek obviously had a strong bond with the figurines. They are among the oldest figurative artworks worldwide. We discuss their discovery.
