Im Jahr 1999 versammelten sich 50 der bekanntesten Wissenschaftler der fr\u00fchen Urgeschichte in T\u00fcbingen um die zweite internationale Konferenz zum Thema „Middle Paleolithic and Middle Stone Age Settlement Systems“ abzuhalten. Sie pr\u00e4sentierten die Ergebnisse der neuesten Ausgrabungen und stellten neue Hypothesen und theoretische Modelle der Siedlungsdynamik dieser Periode auf, in der sich anatomisch und kulturell moderne Menschen entwickelten. Der hier vorgestellte Band enth\u00e4lt 27 Beitr\u00e4ge, die auf der T\u00fcbinger Konferenz vorgetragen wurden und fasst den derzeitigen Wissenstand \u00fcber die Siedlungsdynamik dieser Periode zusammen.<\/p>\n

As Conard points out in his introduction, „While researchers are still far from the goal of establishing reliable interpretations for Middle Paleolithic settlement systems, the significant advances in recent years provide some basis for optimism and point to new advances in research.“ Through documentation and discussion of many of these significant new advances, the authors of these chapters have created a useful „state of the art“ research statement that does indeed suggest new directions for expanded research.

Donc toutes les synth\u00e9ses de ce genre ne peuvent que nous aider \u00e0 faire le point, \u00e0 capitaliser, patiemment, les changements importants de ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, encore trop peu lisibles dans nos imaginaires respectifs cantonnant toujours N\u00e9andertal dans le r\u00f4le du mauvais \u00e9l\u00e8ve de la classe. Comme si son extinction programm\u00e9e lui tenait immanquablement lieu de tare ad vitam eternam quant \u00e0 son r\u00f4le dans le progr\u00e8s des acquis techniques, sociaux ou \u00e9conomiques de l’humanit\u00e9. Pour toutes ces raisons, et bien d’autres, la lecture de cet ouvrage, du moins sa consultation et sa commande par nos biblioth\u00e8ques institutionnelles, ne peut \u00eatre que vivement recommand\u00e9e.
